Boy Of 1942...
Doreman 5 years old
Born July 28th, 1942 in Slaton, TX. Small town Slaton was only 31 years old at the time. Doreman L. Burns was brand new. His parents were Al & Jerry Burns. He was their first child followed 9 years later by Glee Burns and brother, Rhett, in 1960.
Pearl Harbor had been attacked only 6 months earlier and Franklin D. Roosevelt was president. In the 1940s, war changes everything. The government restricts the use of wool, and single-breasted jackets and cuff- and pleat-free pants become the norm. Once the boys come home, big style roars back with wide lapels, spread collars, and roomy suits. Hollywood releases of 1942 include "Bambi", "Casablanca", "The Magnificant Ambersons", "The Man Who Came To Dinner", "Mrs. Miniver", "Pride Of The Yankees" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy" to name a few.
The average annual salary in 1942 was $2,400, minimum wage 30 cents per hour, postage stamp 3 cents, gasoline .19 cents per gallon, a car $1,100, houses $6,950 and a gallon of milk was 60 cents. Bing Crosby's song "White Christmas" is heard for the first time.
July 28th, 1942: Harrison Ford (Star Wars, Indiana Jones) is only two weeks old, Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead) will be born in a couple of days, Paul McCartney is about 4 weeks old, Jimi Hendrix will arrive in just 4 months and Mick Jagger will be born almost exactly one year later along with Roger Waters of Pink Floyd.

Doreman and his mother, Jerry, were close. One of their favorite pastime's was going to the movie theatres. Lubbock boasted possibly as many as 20 theaters during the 40's and 50's. Doreman would later work as a "door man" at the Lindsey Theater in downtown lubbock. He recalls seeing a young Buddy Holly around town as just an unknown musician and local young man.
Restless and a touch on the mildly wild side, young Doreman join the navy his senior year of high school (Monterey High). Two years in the navy was long enough. Returning to Lubbock around 1963 and soon meeting Sherry Sizemore (of Houston, TX) he fell in love. It was literally a West Texas "whirlwind" courtship and marriage. Their first child, Downey, was born 1965 and second child, Breck, was born in 1966.
Doreman went to Tech briefly to study architecture, delivered auto parts for a small company through out the Panhandle area, owned an ice cream truck and worked at the post office. Around 1968 he opened "The Tape Exchange" in Lubbock. Selling and trading 8 track tapes. He and Sherry even opened a hole in the wall "coffee house" for a very brief time. Sounds like a couple of hippies!

By 1970 "The Tape Exchange" was history and he opened B & B Music (records & tapes) at 1615 University Ave. Childhood friend, Jerry Burgess (Burgess Auto Salvage), was a silent partner for a brief time. B & B Music was "the" music store of Lubbock for many years. In store appearances prior to music concerts at the Lubbock Coliseum included Foghat, Pat Benatar, Derringer and many more. Most all visits by rock groups included a visit to the grave site of Buddy Holly. Closing its doors in 1984 and reopening in 3 days as "All That Jazz" - a college gift store.
"All That Jazz" offered greeting cards, candy, gift sacks, framed posters and unique gifts. Mom (sherry) stepped up to the challenge of the new business and ran the show. Dad and I (Downey) framed posters in the back, drank lots of coffee, listened to talk radio and sweated profusely in the un-airconditioned work space. Mom drove us CRAZY rearranging the store what seemed like constantly.

Jerry, Doreman & Alvin
In 1989 "the times are a changing". Retail is history. Packing it all up and heading for the Santa Fe, New Mexico area. Doreman is an artist/painter. Remember, I mentioned a brief attempt studying architecture. All these years Doreman painted watercolor in his past time. He was good. He was very good. Talk about an adventuresome spirit.
By 1990 Doreman was already establishing himself as a respected painter in the art community and making a living at it. His following steadily grew. By the mid 90's he was selling paintings and posters all over the United States and enjoying a much slower pace of life in New Mexico.
By 2000 mom (Sherry) was painting as well and selling. Life is good.
